Animesh: What It Is & How To Use It

Animesh has been live on the grid for a few months now. With Firestorm recently updating to support it more and more people are curious about how it works.

What Is It?

Animesh is SL’s way of letting objects use rigged mesh and animations just like our avatars can. This gives creators the ability to design objects that can move like avatars. A quick search of the Marketplace shows various animals, toys, and humanoids created with animesh support. Objects that look like avatars are becoming more and more common. These can be used to make sims feel more populated or even keep people company when their friends aren’t around.

Animesh and Avatars

So why am I telling you this when Regeneration is an avatar blog? Because it can impact our avatars as well! There is more freedom than ever before when it comes to animating objects. This includes objects we add to our avatars such as tails, ears, and naughty bits.

It doesn’t stop at body parts, though. Have you ever had a cute cuddly pet that you wanted to hold and snuggle? Now you can, and it can animate too!

Even though animesh came out late last year, it’s still fairly new. I’m sure we’ll start seeing even more animesh exploding into the market over the next few months.

Mesh Crash Course: Troubleshooting Issues

Note: While the images are from 2017 products, the content has been reviewed and is up to date as of July 2020.

Need more mesh help or info? Check out our full Mesh Crash Course.

Sometimes things just don’t go as expected when using mesh heads and bodies in Second Life. Here are some of the most common issues:

  1. Skin, makeup or tattoos don’t apply
  2. Skin, makeup or tattoos appear distorted
  3. Eyelashes are clumpy
  4. Skin, makeup, or tattoos are shiny
  5. Makeup or tattoos are faded
  6. Old body parts show through the new mesh body parts
  7. And many, many more…

While all of these things can be very frustrating, thankfully they are usually an easy fix!

Appliers

Some of the most common problems come from trying to use appliers. If you’re not familiar with them make sure to check out our in depth post on how appliers work.

If you’re finding that skin, makeup, or tattoos aren’t showing up at all it can be a few different things. First you’ll want to make sure you’re using the correct appliers. A Catwa applier, for example, won’t apply to a Lelutka head. If you’re using Omega appliers (the “universal” applier) make sure you also have your Omega System Relay Kits on. You may have to click the relays to activate them. For more information on ensuring you have the right applier and how to use appliers please check out Appliers: How Do They Work?

Delaney at Natural Falls V

Our avatars can do so much more than look nice. They can convey emotion or be used to provoke an emotional response. They can be the main focus or a part of a bigger scene. Honestly they can do anything you want them to do. For many they are an extension of ourselves. Today you’ll get the see Delaney’s visit to Natural Falls V.

This gorgeous skin can be found at the 7 Deadly s{K}ins booth at Ultra until April 15. She was designed for LeLutka’s Simone bento head (seen in the credits section), though in this post you see her on Catwa’s Lona. I think she looks absolutely lovely on both. She can be purchased with LeLutka or Omega appliers. No matter which you select you’ll receive 7 skin tones and omega body appliers to match.

Located at Domain West, Natural Falls V is a gorgeous location perfect for photographs and exploration. While it’s not your standard thought of beauty (flooded ruins containing an amusement park, warehouses, and more) it’s still absolutely stunning. I was surprised at just how many unique poses there were with various backdrops and props. I encourage you to go exploring and see what fun you can find!

Fantasy Avatar: Neko Girl

Not all Second Life avatars have to be human. You’ve seen The Demoness, the Elven Maiden, and the Vampire Queen. Get ready for the sexy adorable Neko Girl! Men can be Neko characters as well, all you need are ears and a tail! The cute outfit is just a bonus. Today’s look shows off items from Aii The Ugly & Beautiful, Catwa, and Caboodle.

Get The Neko Girl Look

Neko Girl (and Boy) style can really be anything. Some people prefer the sexy avatar, some prefer cutesy. I went sexy for this post since the outfit I wanted to share is a bit on the revealing side. The core parts of a neko are the ears and tail. Kitty eyes are a bonus but not required. I happened to already have all of these items, but neko products aren’t hard to find if you need to shop!

Aii The Ugly & Beautiful sells fantasy products of all types for all genders. You can find skins, body modifications (such as a centipede lower body), clothing, accessories, tattoos, and more at their lovely store. They also have tons of free gifts and group gifts as well as a large gacha room.

The ears and tail I’m wearing are both from the Neko Neko Gacha created for Fantasy Gacha Carnival February of 2017. Both are bento and have super adorable movements included. There is no HUD AO for these two items, they simply handle the cute little twitches and wiggles on their own.

Fantasy Avatar: The Demoness

Not all Second Life avatars have to be human. In fact, non human avatars are a common sight in Second Life. Today I’ll be showing you a beautiful demoness. The best part about making many fantasy humanoids is that they can build off the human base you may already be using!
Shoutout to hhhnnnnnggggggg for inspiring this post! The redditor commented on a post about Second Life Avatar Questions and mentioned he or she had purchased a set of bento demon wings. That in addition to a short conversation about fantasy avatars gave me the little push to start showing off some non human characters.

Get the Demoness Look

Since most players likely have the basics they enjoy using (such as a body, feet, hands, head) I haven’t included those in this section. I used mostly products that I already had, however a few new purchases were made. If you’d like to copy the style completely you can find full credits at the bottom of the post. Feel free to click any image for a larger version to check out the detail.

Shapes and Skins: Making You Unique

Note: While the images used are of products from 2017 when the post was originally written, the content has been reviewed to ensure it is relevant for 2020.

Shapes and Skins are a core part of your Second Life avatar. They determine your proportions and how your body looks to you and others. The skin compliments the shape and vice versa. Nowadays many skins come with shapes, but not all of them do! You can also buy shapes on their own. Keep reading to learn just how your shape and skin choices can make you look unique.

Shape Basics

Your shape controls the base shape of your avatar. When using a system avatar every single slider will alter a different part of your head, body, hands, or feet. With mesh avatars these can be altered as well, however some sliders may or may not have much of an impact on what you see. You can purchase shapes, create your own, or edit some that you’ve already obtained (as long as they have modify permissions).

I think of the shape as the foundation of my avatar. Every skin, every piece of clothing, and every accessory is used in conjunction with the shape. As shapes vary greatly it’s not uncommon for some clothing and accessories to require a little alteration to fit perfectly on a custom shape.
